If you want to learn how to break away from self-doubt and build confidence, this article was EXACTLY made because of you.
It's a very hard thing to overcome. And the more you try to overcome it, the harder it holds you back – if you didn't pay close attention to details. I know how you feel, my friend.
You want to build self-confidence, self-esteem, self-discipline to help you overcome the challenges you're facing in your life. You need to fight that battle with that voice in your head.
According to American Psychological Association, Robert Akin, PhD, a psychological professor from Ohio State University says in a research:
Self-doubters evaluate themselves from the perspective of others. So, the pleasure one of them would take from having a possession might not be defined so much by how much they enjoy it, but by how others covet it — Robert Akin, PhD
A well researched article from Psychology Compass states that "Self-doubt can be a persuasive voice that holds you back from performing your best..... can hold you back from doing things that you know will be good for both your career and personal development."
However, don't let all the feelings of self-doubt ruin you from enjoying the good life you deserve. Don't let it hurt
- Your mindset
- Performance
- Mental health and
- Productivity
In fact, before I wrote this article for you I too began to face self-doubt .... I thought why would someone waste their time to read this? But here you are right now, reading it. If I had kept doubting you wouldn't have come across it.
I beat that negative voices and did the writing anyway.
And I'll show you how you can deal with that voice so you too can break away from self-doubt and build self-confidence. But before that, you need to know the kind of self-doubt you're facing.
The Common Types of Self-doubt People Face in Life?
There are many ways people fall into self-doubt and there are many types of self-doubt people face in life. But the main thing IS that self-doubt is controllable. You can defeat it. You can overcome it. Based on my experience and what I understand from most people, the common types are 2:
- First-tier Self-doubt
- Second-tier Self-doubt
1. First-tier Self-doubt:
It is the most dangerous!
This type of self-doubt happens when you did not even try to do what we say you want to do but end up judging it as unachievable, fake or unreal.
Solution:
Don't underrate the value of a goal you want to achieve unless you try it. It may look impossible or too big to you, but don't underrate it's potential. Keep trying.
This leads to the second type of self-doubt↓
2. Second-tier Self-doubt:
It is different than the first-tier.
It is the kind of self-doubt where a person had already started doing the work but in the process, they begin to doubt if it's gonna grow up.
Then they find themselves into self-doubt because of that anxious feeling to see immediate change. Impatience, right?
People with this kind of self-doubt are brave enough to overcome the first-tier part of self-doubt by believing in their goals at first. But as they start it pursuing it, they lack confidence.
Solution:
• Always tell your mind that your goals will definitely take time before they become real
• Believe that it will be hard and the closer you approach it, the harder it will become
• Don't expect luck or something like it. Be realistic. Believe you'll see many closed doors, but they won't stop you.
By putting these in mind, closed doors and obstacles won't be your worry.
Now, here's the whole thing you've been searching for:
How to Break Away From Self-doubt in 7 Simple Ways (and Build Self-confidence)
With the right strategy and patterns, breaking away from that annoying voices of self-doubt is super simple. Here are some of them below:
- Trust yourself
- Eliminate perfectionism
- Adopt realistic expectations
- Celebrate small wins
- Don't wait for the best time
- Network with like-minded
- Use the 5-Second Rule
1. Trust Yourself
It is very simple (but only few of us can do it the right way).
Have you ever got yourself disbelieving in your abilities? Have you ever had the feeling that you're loosing your inner self-confidence? Have you ever got the need to do something but you ended up giving up without trying it?
I know it's true, you did. Many times. On many things.
Do you know why? Because you've been putting limits on yourself. And that limitations are what caused self-distrust and that's why you may be dealing with self-doubt now. Self-doubt disturbs your mind and hold your ability of moving forward.
Ways to Overcome Limiting Belief and Increase Self-trust?
There are many ways you can follow to overcome those limiting belief and increase self-trust. Some of them include:
1. Don't blame others. Blame yourself. Because blaming others can make
you feel and believe that your limits and procrastination wasn't from you but
from them — the people you blame.
2.
Remember the negative effect of limiting
beliefs. Understand that the more you put limits on yourself the more you
are holding yourself back from achieving what you want.
3.
Disbelieve the belief. Always remember
that your limiting beliefs are just believes that you form by thinking about it, and
believing in it day to day was what made it your belief. To change it, you can change
those things that you have believe in which are limiting you from moving on.
4.
Don't compare yourself with other people.
More especially comparing your status with theirs. Don't do that.
5.
Appreciate who you are. Be grateful with the
little you have today and use it to build a better tomorrow.
2. Perfectionism
Are you wondering how could perfectionism increase self doubt?
Let me show you how.
If you're suffering with perfectionism — the feeling that you want to please people, you want to make them like you, praise you and regard you a different person —it can lead to self-doubt because anytime you try to do something better for your life you MUST think of what people would think.
From then, "what ifs" and "maybes" will start coming into your mind.
And the more what ifs and maybes you have, the more it will increase self-doubt in your mind.
According to
Forbes ".... perfectionism affects millions of people today, and it can have negative repercussions in your life, career, relationships and health."
It's heading toward an epidemic and public health issue — Katie Ramussen
Not only that, let me show you what Sarah Egan, a senior research fellow at Curtin University at Perth says:
There are studies that suggest that the higher the perfection is, the more psychological disorders you are going to suffer.
An article
from BBC shows that people with "perfectionism tendencies have been linked to a laundry list of chronic issues." The article made mention of dyspepsia, chronic headaches, chronic fatigue syndrome, anorexia and many more.
Listen, my friend, your cause of self-doubt can be perfectionism if you want to learn
how to break away from self-doubt you should first
get rid of perfectionism.
Solution
How to Break Away From Perfectionism (the Fastest Way)?
- Don't let anyone influence you immediately
- Don't be ruined by those as-if-happy people you see online
- Train your heart on a daily basis to do things that nobody cares about doing. With that, you can learn to adapt the habit of doing things without trying to perfect anyone
- Train your heart to be disciplined
- Practice self-compassion
- Accept making mistakes in the first trial
- Don't expect things to be perfectly done
- Adopt self-discipline and let it rule you
3. Adopt Realistic Expectations
Remember that well-known maxim? "Cut your coat according to your cloth"
Isn't that true? Of course, 'YES!'
But.... you are too unrealistic. You expect things beyond imagination. You plan things without even a strategy to get it done. You write down to-do list that you hardly attain 45% of. You frequently wish things would change easily.
You see! All these are things you've been doing. And it's unrealistic.
To break away from self-doubt, you need to
- Be realistic
- Set proper goals
- Make good decisions
- Don't be upset when things go wrong
- Acccept who you are
- Be adaptive to change
- Act more than you just plan
4. Celebrate Small Wins
Big wins look great but small wins are realistic... and inspirational.
Something I realize from most people with self-doubt is that they barely celebrate small wins.
Can small win celebration reduce self-doubt?
Of course, yes. Celebrating your small accomplishments can make you feel grateful about the work you're doing by increasing the power of self-esteem and self-discipline.
When you are not celebrating those small wins, you hardly know the great gifts you've accomplished.
You'd find yourself counting other guru's blessings with fancy when what you have that you 'think' is small, there might be someone out there who can die to get it.
And that guru you admire is definitely — I'm sure — willing to get more fortune other gurus successful than them had.
That's life!
Accept the little things you've accomplished but don't let it make your will and determination soft.
5. Don't Wait for Best Time
A lot of people make this mistake!
Should I guess something about you? There's something you're feeling right now. Let's bet!
✔️ There is something you want to accomplish. The thing is very important in your life
✔️ You planned to be well-prepared before starting, but somewhere in your spirit didn't believe because you think you're too old or too young
✔️ Or maybe you think you don't have enough money to start....
Isn't it? That's it. Do you understand what you're doing ?
You are taking yourself far, very far away from your success. You're waiting for the 'best time' so you'll start pursuing your goals.
Hmmm.... believe me there's no best time in this life.
The moment you overcome the thing you think is what stops you from moving, then you'll immediately see another obstacle coming into your life. What would you do then?
Should I tell you the truth? Please, start making plans right now and start executing what you've planned RIGHT NOW!
Don't hesitate to
take any risk you find on your way. The moment you keep delaying, waiting for the best time, the worst you become. Your ideas need to be brought to life immediately when you start forming them.
There's a psychological Law: The Law of Diminishing Intent.
The psychological law shows that if you want to do something great then you have to take action immediately when the idea is burning inside of you. Don't wait for the best time because it can make that idea to diminish from your mind and your brain.
Solution: How to Stop Waiting for the Best Time
- Always tell your mind 'best time' doesn't exist. If you truly want to strive further in life, just start.
- Take action immediately when you have an idea
- You can start small, then grow up better
- Incorporate growth mindset
- Try The Podomoro Technique. When your head is locked and ideas were broken —take break, come back. Take break and come back again.
6. Network With Like-minded People
You may be dealing with self-doubt because the
people around you are the ones increasing it.
We're all humans and many of us want to be in the public eye at work, college or in the neighborhood.
But when you live among people who always say
- You're not worth listened or
- They think you're stupid or crazy
- Neglect you or ignore your ideas
- Doesn't care about your dream or
- Not in line with your interest....
What you should do is please, change friends or the easiest way is to reduce the amount of time you spend with them and exchange to spending time with people who are
- Searching for more out of life
- Thinking out of the box
- Willing make a difference
- Willing to strive and achieve their goals
- Willing to support themselves and grow together
These are the kind of people you should start networking with. These are the kind of people you should start befriending and making relationships together with.
How Could Toxic People Increase Your Self-doubt?
Mingling with these guys who are toxic and negative will have many mental, physical and educational effects in your life. Limit your time with time or even CUT. THEM. OFFFFFF.
You've read math? Negative + positive equals what? It's negative.
7. Use the 5-Second Rule
This rule is very important in fighting self-doubt. I guarantee you, my friend.
There are several times you may wish to do something but from nowhere you start doubting yourself. Doesn't it happens?
Anytime these kind of thoughts, these stubborn negative voices begin to come into your mind to stop you — think about the 5 Second Rule and apply it.
How Can 5 Second Rule Help Overcome Self-doubt?
The 5-second rule was clearly explained and talked about by Mel Robbins. In her book,
The 5-Second Rule, she talked about the rule and how it can help overcome several obstacles of self-doubt, perfectionism and low self-esteem. It can help overcome self-doubt because it eliminate feeling of fear and boost confidence immediately when you use it.
You can get many things done if you apply the 5-second rule which is to count down 5 to BOOOOOM! Like this.....
- 5
- 4
- 3
- 2
- 1
- Goooo! And make your goals happen!
